The Peacemaking Committee of the Synod of Alaska-Northwest seeks individuals or groups working in or outside the church in creative ways to bring the gospel of reconciliation practically, spiritually and emotionally to bear on their local community, to receive the annual Award.

The Peacemaking Committee announces a new funding initiative to encourage Camps and Conferences to integrate Peacemaking themes into their camping schedule. $3,000 will be available to one Camp and Conference Center per year chosen by the Committee for exemplary use of Peace themes. Monday, December 07, 2009 (76 reads)

The Synod Peacemaking Committee gives an annual award to individuals and groups within the Synod who exemplify creative ways to bring a gospel of peace to their community. The award was named for Helen Hamilton, a Presbyterian woman who has done peacemaking work within the Synod and all over the world.

This year's Helen Hamilton award was given to honor the work of Peter and Mary van der Veen of Bellingham. They were nominated for the honor by their church, St. James Presbyterian. The Synod has since received a letter of "thanks" from the Van Der Veens, below.

We look at the world God continues to bless.
We say, "Thank you." and weep, for we've made quite a mess.
We're not very young and we're only a few
But God's made it clear that as long as we're here,
There's Peacemaking to do.

The family we have and the families we know
Are places where big folks and small folks can grow.
Alienation, rancor, and meanness must cease.
Harmony at home is a mission of peace.
Living together in love stops the fights.
We'll be the Children of God: We'll fly kites!
